Wilson - 7th Ed
The Bedford Introduction to Drama
Jacobus - 3rd Ed (anthology of plays)
1. To introduce beginning students to the nature and function
of
theatre as a living art, helping them to understand the
interrelationship of script, acting, design and craftsmanship in
the
development and presentation of a theatrical production in the
hopes
that the student will develop a life-long interest in attending
and
enjoying theatrical performances.
2. To work towards an appreciation of major dramatic works
of
different periods, cultures and genres. To analize these works in
order that the student might perceive the diversity of theatrical
interest and production approaches that these scripts might
generate.
3. To gain an understanding of the responsibilities and the
collaborative function of the principal theatre artists:
playwright,
producer, director, designers and actor, showing the student how
the
several artists and artisans involved, as well as the audience,
integrate
their respective functions to create each unique temporal
performance
event.
4. To challenge and exercise the creative aptitudes inherent in
the
student, both to begin the development of these qualities and to
show
the student how theatre artists use them.
5. To develop the student's critical ability to evaluate a work
of
performing art and to express meaningfully and succinctly a
perception of why the performance functioned the way it did.
6. To introduce the students to each of the areas represented
by
other drama courses, in order that they may understand their
interrelationship before entering one or more of these courses.
